Meet Marian “Mazzie” Birgenheier — Music Educator, Performer, and Client Relations for Senchant’s Art of Teaching

Music has always been part of Marian “Mazzie” Birgenheier’s life. Raised in a home filled with sound—by a father who served on Hunter College’s music faculty and a mother who kept music playing daily—Mazzie developed a deep, intuitive connection to music from an early age. Surrounded by the timeless influence of The Beatles, The Monkees, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, her musical identity was shaped by harmony, melody, and storytelling.

At just eight years old, Mazzie received her first acoustic guitar, sparking a journey that would evolve into a lifelong passion. Though her early years were not marked by constant formal training, the 1980s reignited her commitment to music. A self-taught musician, Mazzie emerged as a guitarist, lyricist, vocalist, and harmony specialist, known for emotionally resonant performances and distinctive vocal presence.

Mazzie became the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band Universal Joint, later rebranding as Astral Park in 1995. Performing throughout Boston and New York, she earned a reputation for powerful “YES” lyrics and ethereal vocals that connected deeply with audiences. Her ability to blend expressive songwriting with strong musicianship set her apart in the regional music scene.

In 2006, Mazzie joined the band HRT, a group built around the empowering message that “Mom’s rock.” While not a parent herself, Mazzie embraced the spirit of the message wholeheartedly, bringing warmth, authenticity, and heart to the stage. Around this time, she discovered two life-changing passions: the bass guitar and her creative partnership with Bernard “Senchant™” Birgenheier, co-owner of Senchant’s Art of Teaching.

Together, Mazzie and Bernie became an inseparable musical duo. Her bass playing and vocal work led to national exposure, including appearances connected to the Today Show, SXSW in Austin, Texas, and numerous live radio performances. She also served as a rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist for the Liz Borden Band, further expanding her professional portfolio.

Mazzie’s signature harmonies earned her opportunities to record with The Next Paradigm for Emerson College, highlighting her versatility as both a performer and studio vocalist. Even after a knee injury in 2011, Mazzie’s dedication never wavered. She went on to join the all-female rock band The ChickZ and became a SAT ensemble teacher, mentoring the next generation of musicians.

Beyond performance, Mazzie’s impact extends to the community. In 2013, The ChickZ hosted a benefit concert at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston to support victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy—using music as a force for healing and unity.

Today, Mazzie brings her creativity, compassion, and real-world experience into every lesson at Senchant’s Art of Teaching, inspiring students to find their voice, confidence, and musical identity.
